Tenure track position in Applied Combinatorics and Optimization at CWI, Amsterdam

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) invites researchers to apply for a tenure track position in Applied Combinatorics and Optimization within the Networks & Optimization group.

We particularly invite qualified women to apply.

Job description
Discrete optimization and algorithmics play a central role at the interface of mathematics and computer science, with a wide range of applications to other scientific disciplines like physics and economics and to practice including logistics, transportation, data clustering, and biological networks.

We are looking for a highly talented research scientist who is specialized in discrete mathematics and optimization. You should not only be an excellent mathematician, but also have a real interest in initiating, and contributing to, applied research projects in the area of logistic processes, which is now one of the five strategic themes at CWI and a top sector in Dutch science policy. You should have the potential and ambition to become a world leader in the field.

You will become member of the Networks & Optimization group. The group is well-renowned and has a strong international reputation, both on fundamental mathematics and on applications of the results to practice. Examples of such application areas in logistics are train timetabling, transportation systems and navigation systems. You are expected to acquire funding to build your own research line and research group.

This vacancy is part of an incentive, in which twelve tenure track positions in mathematics will become available at Dutch universities and research institutes. This is made possible by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science via the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). For more information, please visit www.nwo.nl/math.

For more information, please contact:
Prof.dr. M. Laurent, monique.laurent@cwi.nl.

Requirements
We expect a strong track record of innovative research and publications in leading international journals, and the ambition and potential to acquire personal research grants in the Netherlands or from the EU, as well as external funding for fundamental and applied research. Moreover, the candidate should be an independently working researcher with at least two years of postdoctoral experience and with excellent communication skills.

Terms and conditions
The position is for three or five years depending on knowledge and experience. At the end of a successful tenure track term a permanent scientific staff position will be offered. Criteria for evaluation comprise a track record of publications that is well above average, and the ability to acquire funding and to achieve an (inter)national network and reputation.

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). Depending on relevant work experience, the gross monthly salary for an employee on a full time basis ranges from € 3,228 to € 5,473. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8,33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.

How to apply
Applicants with at least two years of postdoctoral experience, should send:
- a motivation letter;
- a curriculum vitae with a list of publications;
- a copy of their thesis and/or of their three most prominent publications;
- the names of at least three prominent scientists who can provide letters of recommendation;
- a research statement and a research plan for the coming years, including plans on how to acquire additional funding.

Please send your application before 1 July 2013 to:
