Team Description

This internship will be hosted in Innovation and Research Division of Amadeus, in the team dedicated to Analysis and Researches. Scope of team covers identification of business opportunities in Travel Industry or improve the existing business by introducing new approaches and technologies. The team competencies cover a large scope such modeling, operation research and optimization, data science and machine learning.

Subject

Amadeus is the world leader in the travel industry supporting our customers at the different levels from strategic to operational areas. This internship falls in the strategic area where we help an airline defining the cabin configuration of its aircraft fleet or the layout of passenger cabin accommodation (LOPA). Indeed, the configuration of cabins (Eco, Business, First) is requested by the Airline whenever a new aircraft is purchased. A cabin configuration covers all details of passenger accommodations on-board and is therefore the main driver to set-up the maximum number of seats available for sale in each cabin. In a A380 aircraft for instance, the expected revenue from its exploitation can significantly vary according to the selected cabin configuration. Of course, the profile of demand expected to book in flights operated by this aircraft matters.

The objective and challenge of the proposed internship is to help the team to propose a robust cabin configuration for the long run, which optimizes the expected profit from the aircraft. The first phase on the internship focus on building a long term forecast for passenger traffic and also the estimation of the distribution by Cabin Eco, Business and First. To do so, all approaches, data and indicators that can help improving the forecast will be considered such as historical traffic and economic data, future projections, economic trends… A good estimation of passenger traffic and its distribution is a key because the selection of best layout configuration will be based on that.  

The next step consists in participate to develop the evaluation framework needed to compareevaluate the different configurations or LOPA proposed. Different approaches such as mathematical models or simulation will be considered. The robustness of the proposed configuration will be also part of the solution evaluation.
