STEEP is an interdisciplinary team that tries to model regional transition to sustainability and develops mathematical and computational tools for decision-making. This group gathers physicists, modelers, geographers/planners, mathematicians and computer scientists.
This position is offered at the "Rhone-Alpes" Research Unit of INRIA, located near Grenoble and Lyon. The Unit includes more than 700 people, within 34 research teams and 10 support services.
The proposed position takes place in the STEEP team (Sustainability, Transition, Environment, Economy and local Policy). STEEP is an interdisciplinary research team of INRIA Rhône-Alpes, the aim of which is twofold:
- to identify and assess the relevant factors for a transition to sustainability at local (sub-national) scales.
- to develop mathematical and computational decision-making tools to support decision makers in the implementation of this transition.
To this effect, we take advantage of various existing energy / environment / land-use / transport models. These models are designed to simulate the effects of a given policy, or to optimize a policy choice under constraints. A constraint can be for example to reduce the pollutant emission or to satisfy the heating demand.
The goal of this post-doc is to develop a transport / land-use / energy / environment model at a local scale. We aim at combining two existing models (or at least getting inspiration from them): TRANUS [1] which describes a "transport / land-use" system, and ETEM [2] which models the interactions between the energy and the environment (in particular greenhouse gases (eg. CO2) and ozone precursors (NO2 and volatile organic compounds)).
Several possibilities are conceivable. A first solution can be given by a coupling method using oracle approaches. A more proper method could consists in taking inspiration from the ETEM model to design a new module in the TRANUS model which is already made up of two modules, one for the land-use and another one for the transport.
From the practical point of view, our goal is to apply the obtained model on the labour market area of Grenoble. Such a model could be used, for example, to completely understand and quantify the impacts of the construction of the North bypass of Grenoble on the environment and the urbanization. More precisely, it could allow to quantify and understand the impact of the North bypass of Grenoble on the suburb spreading and related loss of agricultural and semi-natural land, and its retroactions on the road traffic and then on the atmospheric pollution.
