Ph.D. Studentship in multi-objective optimization for door-to-door freight transportation at the LAAS-CNRS, Toulouse, France
Applications are invited for a 3-year ANR-funded Ph.D. studentship to study multi-objective optimization for door-to-door freight service network at the LAAS-CNRS in Toulouse, France (http://www.laas.fr). Candidates should have a strong background in operations research, especially in combinatorial optimization and mathematical programming (integer programming, search tree algorithms, decomposition techniques...) and a particular interest in transportation and logistics. Computer science skills in algorithmic and C/C++ development are also welcome.
More precisely, the goal is to take into account the door-to-door freight transportation in its entirety: collection phase, transportation between the platforms, and distribution phase. The problem combines several aspects: vehicle routing problems, long-haul freight transportation, and intermodal transportation. Moreover, the project is considered in a context where a consortium works together. Therefore, innovative aspects linked to cooperative logistics need to be considered. We also wish to investigate the use of multi-objective optimization to model the problem. Fundamental research will be a central element of the project as there is a need to propose new and efficient methods for the problem and multi-objective optimization in general. Focus will be on exact methods based on integer programming and mathematical heuristics. Applicative facets will also be present via DHL, which is a partner in the ANR project RESPET (Efficient Management for Door-to-Door Freight Service Networks).
The studentship is open to applicants of all nationalities. The applicant should hold a master in operations research, computer science or applied mathematics. The successful candidate will receive a monthly salary of around 1500 € / 2000 $ (after taxes).
Further enquiries should be addressed to: Nicolas Jozefowiez (njozefow_at_laas.fr) and Frédéric Semet (frederic.semet_at_ec-lille.fr )
Applicants should send by email an up-to-date CV, a covering letter, scores and ranking during the last two years of academic studies, a copy of their master thesis, and if possible a letter of recommendation.
