PhD proposal for spring 2006

Title: spectrum assignment optimization
Keywords: radio spectrum management, combinatorial optimisation, algorithmic
Proposed research:
Wireless networks are based on radio transmission communications. The limited spectrum does not allow the communications to use different bandwidth so interference problems have to be solved during spectrum assignment to transmitters. From this general consideration a lot of different models exist, dedicated to the particularity of different communications systems such GSM, WIFI, WIMAX, etc. Also a lot of different algorithms were proposed sometime to exactly solve the problems and sometime to get good solutions on them.
The research we propose is dedicated to a specific communications system and combines different spectrum optimization goals: search for exact solutions, search for good solutions and search for set of solutions in multi-criteria case. The work will firstly need to investigate the different optimisation problems, and then from a huge bibliography to propose several algorithmic choices. A second phase will be to propose the right combination of approaches to develop and to get the best performance on several benchmarks. An insight analysis of search procedures will be asked to understand the influence of the method components on results.
Context:
The work will be done in the SET Lab (Systems and Transports) at Belfort inside the French University of Technology of Belfort-Montbéliard (East of France). The Lab is composed of 60 people whom about 20 Phd. The team in charge of the work is involved in several research projects and the PhD will be developed in one of them. The team has a huge experience in radio communications and optimization. It is currently composed of 10 people. The candidate will have the opportunity to get a high level of competence on radio system optimization.
Profile:
Background on operation research and algorithmic are absolutely needed for that work: training, project, internship... The candidate must also have a good level on C/C++ on PC. And knowledge on radio communications will be very helpful. Good English.
