Postdoc in Route Net Design

The Department of Management Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as postdoc within the field of Route Net Design. The period of employment is two years with start 1 April 2009, or soonest possible thereafter.

The position is attached to the section of Operations Research (OR) at the Department. DTU Management Engineering aims at becoming one of the leading OR-groups in Scandinavia by bringing together various OR-groups from the Copenhagen area. The Department has around 200 people employed, of which 25 are in the OR-group.

Description of the project

Liner shipping companies offer scheduled transportation services based on a route net. A good route net should ensure short transportation times, a high utilisation of the vessels and low energy consumption. The successful candidate will model and implement optimisation algorithms for route net design.

The project aims at developing tools for network design, possibly taking into account seasonal variation, and interplay with other transportation means, such that a complete door-to-door planning tool will be available. Due to the size and complexity of the problem, it will be necessary to use the latest optimisation methods, which could include advanced heuristics and decomposition techniques. The outcome of the project will be a prototype algorithm, which will be tested at actual data from a leading liner shipping company.

The postdoc is part of the ENERPLAN project carried out in cooperation between DTU Management, the IT-University and Maersk Line. The main goal of the project is to develop intelligent IT-based tools for aiding the
transportation sector in planning and executing their operations in order to reduce energy consumption.

The project is supported by The Danish Council for Strategic Research, within the programme "Green IT".

Qualifications requirements

Candidates should have a Master's degree in computer science, engineering or a similar degree and academic qualifications equivalent to the PhD level.
