Postdoctoral Fellowship in Dynamic Resource Allocation Problems
@ University of Toronto
Position Summary:
We invite applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellowship position to advance research in the
field of dynamic resource allocation problems and Markov decision processes. The candidate will
develop quantitative models, analyze their structural properties, and design algorithmic solution
approaches, to problems related to approximate dynamic programming and reinforcement
learning with a particular focus on applications in healthcare. They will collaborate with Associate
Professor Andre Cire in the Department of Management, University of Toronto Scarborough
(cross-appointed with the Operations Management and Statistics group at the Rotman School of
Management), Associate Professor Adam Diamant in the Operations Management and Information
Systems group at the Schulich School of Business, and Assistant Professor Vahid Sarhangian in in
the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and the Director of the Centre for
Healthcare Engineering (CHE) at the University of Toronto.
The successful applicant is expected to lead state-of-the-art research in sequential decision-making
leveraging Markov decision processes, mathematical programming, and reinforcement learning
techniques. They will also receive regular mentorship and training and will be expected to
disseminate their research findings by submitting academic manuscripts to top management
science journals such as those on the Financial Times journal list.
Qualifications:
1. Ph.D. (earned or to be granted) in Management Science, Operations Management/Research,
Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related fields.
2. Strong expertise in at least one of the following fields: dynamic programming, Markov decision
processes, reinforcement learning, probability theory, mathematical programming, Bayesian
optimization, and discrete optimization.
3. Strong communication skills (both written and spoken) and self-motivation.
4. Advanced programming skills with knowledge in one of Python/R/Java/C and optimization
libraries such as CPLEX and GUROBI.
