Research Engineer
Air Liquide
Paris Saclay ResearchCenter - 78
Position
Optimization& Data Analysis Engineer
Missions
You will thrive in theCorporate Research and Development of the Air Liquide Group, the heart ofinnovation, providing a stimulating environment with many challenges and newhorizons. More specifically, within the Applied Mathematics Group, theOptimization & Data analysis engineerwill contribute to the IndustrialEfficiency Actions (Enterprise Wide Optimization and Smart Manufacturing) andwill provide his/her scientific leadership to guide the technical choices as areference.
The Optimization &Data analysis Research Engineer will be in charge of developing optimizationmethods and performing statistical studies using advanced statistics and dataanalysis technologies (data mining, text mining...). He/she will be workingwith the IT and Digital departments to industrialize and transfer these methodsinto reliable tools for the Operations. These methods and tools are meant toincrease the overall efficiency of the production assets by implementingdescriptive, predictive, prescriptive analytics.
The generic contributionwill be to:
● Execute, manage and deliver R&D projects as part of a global R&D program in theframe of the R&D process
● Communicatewith global R&D team and maintain strong cooperative working relationshipswith numerous partners and internal stakeholders
● Contributeto the strategy formulation by identifying efficiency gains and highlightingthe mid and long term stakes
● Be thescientific and technical reference in his expertise domain
More specifically, theOptimization and Data Analysis research engineer will:
● Driveinnovation in research projects focused on development of  optimizationtools for our production assets under common optimization platforms:
✓ Define theoptimization problem, specify requirements and investigate options (models &optimization algorithms) for solving the problem by a thorough listening of thecustomers. Identify, evaluate and thus contribute to the selection ofindustrial or academic partners, if necessary.
✓ Developsolutions for specified problems, including coding and detailed commenting ofnewly added functionalities.
✓ Implementnew functionalities in optimization solvers, including translation ofspecifications into software code
✓ Supporttesting of solvers, including definition of test cases, analysis of feasibilityand performance tests results in a quality software mindset.
✓ Ensure thetransfer of the prototype to the operations entities and provide support to theindustrialization phase, in close collaboration with the IT and Digitaldepartments when relevant
✓ Take fullownership of optimization solver and train team members on details ofresolution methodologies implemented, thus ensuring sustainability of solutionfor Air Liquide.
✓ ChallengeOptimization methods used at Air Liquide.
● Lead dataanalysis for Air Liquide’s Large Industry business especially in the domainof predictive asset maintenance and reliability analysis:
✓ understandthe industrial processes and identify the associated databases
✓ Performdiagnosis on the content and the structure of the databases (volumetry, typesof data, architectures…)
✓ Be instrong interaction with IT entities for the requirement to build a big datacenter/server
✓ Performdata mining analyses on samples of data in line with business needs (KPIs)
✓ Screen& Benchmark off-the-shelf solutions
✓ Advocatefor methods and technologies adapted to the applications (anomalydetection algorithms, outlier detection, pattern recognition, clustering, predictive algorithms…)
✓ Developprototypes for pre-industrialization for testing and validation by operations
Background/Experiencerequired
● PhDin Operations Research / Data Science and/or Grande Ecole Engineering Schooland / or international master’s degree.
● Solidknowledge of optimization methods and algorithms (combinatorial optimization, non linear programming, optimization under uncertainty…) is required. A firstexperience is preferred on machine learning and/or data miningtechniques including but not limited to supervised/unsupervised learning, advanced regression techniques, and decision trees.
● Must showcommand of using high level modeling and platforms languages such as AIMMS aswell as using statistical tools & programming languages such as R, Python. Must demonstrate highlevel of scientific expertise
● 3/5years of experience in the development and use of computer optimization toolsin an industrial context is a plus.
● Fluent inEnglish to work in an international environment
Behavioral expectations:
● Ability tounderstand and summarize customer requirements (specifications)
● Goodinterpersonal skills, ability to work in cross-functional project teams and topresent and communicate results
● Adaptability,multi-tasking and open-minded ability to make decisions in a dynamic changingenvironment
